Question on the floor

I'm thinking of cutting my land line loose in order to save money. I don't really use it THAT much, and to be honest the only reason I had it was because I needed a fax machine for my client that is leaving me. Now it's going to be $44 a month that could go towards something else ( Read more... )

I know that my daughter is cell phone only, and has been for over a year. It doesn't seem to cause her any problems. I would do the same, but I use DSL instead of cable (since I don't have cable).

I downgraded my cable this morning, but kept the cable modem service. I did get a better deal on it than I had though.

My mom had DSL for a while and didn't have a good experience with it, so that's kind of soured my opinion on that.

I think that it's highly dependent on where you live. I'm using BellSouth Ultra (generally runs over 2MB/s) which has been extremely reliable.

We did that for awhile.

Worked fine. As long as you have net service that doesn't require a phone line (cable, etc.) you're fine. Just make sure your plan covers the minutes/schedule you'll need.

P.S.: If you have broadband, voice over IP (VOIP) seems to be very popular these days. Real telephone service for a fraction of the cost.

I looked at Vonage earlier today. I'm pondering that. It's an option but I'm still not sure.

Thanks!

There's also Skype, which is a more basic service, and doesn't need the extra hardware (but you also don't get a regular telephone to use with it). It may be dramatically cheaper than Vonage, it's worth looking into. The basic service is free, but if you want an actual phone number and such it costs a little.

We have Vonage and love it. $24 a month and free long distance which is perfect because of the kidlets and... well, really they're the only ones I call.

I also did cell only when I was in Spokane and it worked out quite nicely.

Other than the ability to fax, the only other reason I have a land line is because I need one to have my DSL service. Oh, and sometimes I call my cell phone to find out where it's hidden.

I hadn't thought of that.

I got rid of my landline 4 or 5 months ago. I haven't missed it.

Cool. Thanks. I'm just scared to let go of something I've had for so long!
