i totally agree with your general point, but universal health care is definately the only way to go. i think the main reason public educators are so apathetic is because they're paid so little, and that can be avoided by spending more. take some funds out of the ridiculously huge military budget. hell, we could even spend more money on education. also, it's hard for any informed person to call themselves a republican in good conscience. see: every republican president since world war ii. smaller government, lower taxes and personal responsibility are all definately good things, but i'm afraid i can't say the same for the destruction of the environment, a ludicrously bloated military, corporate imperialism etc etc etc etc.
i fully support the separation of style and politics...it's something that is a particular issue for me because i do have more conservative ideas and aesthetic tastes that are more traditionally associated with liberals; additionally, i struggle to educate myself so that i do not automatically assume all conservative positions.
Hating on Unions? What is a union at it's heart but organized labor, the coming together of the less powerful to prevent abuses by the more powerful? While there do exist abuses, the idea is right-on. I would much rather see a larger government with checks and balances and byoorawkrazy than Monopolies and deregulation letting the consumer "affirm good businesses with their pocketbooks" because I do not trust business to make the right decisions nor do I trust the consumer
