I apparently wasn't able to squirt enough of the antibiotic down the cat's gullet last time, as she's once again got a UTI.
Poor kitty. I wasn't entirely certain if it was being sick again, or just upheaval in routine that was causing her to pee in other parts of the house. We just had the drywall and primer done in the basement, and what with all of the contractors in and out, I moved her litterbox up to the laundry room. *I* like having it there - everything's in one spot, it's a lot easier to clean, and I clean it out much more often. (Yes, I'm a bad kitty-mama. Usually, she's pretty tolerant.)
I thought that maybe the dog was keeping her from getting to the laundry room easily, or that she didn't like it as much as having the entire basement for her very own haunt. But, since she was just sick, I figured I'd take her to the vet for a check.
Yeah, another infection. I asked about tuna-flavored liquid, and they'd have to mail order it from a compound pharmacy. Too much trouble. I had them give me a pill instead, and I've got to say, it's working out much better. Plus, she's confined to the laundry room now, instead of the basement, and is no longer able to hide deep under power tools to escape me. I never thought I'd say giving a cat a pill was easy, but it sure is easier than a syringe full of liquid.
First, I tried crushing it and dissolving it in clam juice, but that only worked once, for some reason. Then I just tried the back of the tongue and stroke the throat until she swallows technique, and it was golden. But THEN, she started vomiting every time I gave her a pill. I finally determined it was taking the antibiotic on an empty stomach that was bothering her.
Now, she almost looks happy to get the pill, since I follow it up with a spoonful of tuna and juice. Happy kitty. Since she normally free feeds dry food, it was the only way to guarantee she eats right away.
She's 14, but hardly looks a day over 10. I really hope this clears up quickly and easily (and cheaply) and her old age doesn't become a long, drawn out time of expensive decisions. :-/
I can't believe that I can hardly be bothered to write about my actual life anymore, but I wrote a whole page about giving a cat a pill. *shakes head*
