Some time ago, somebody recommended the book "Siblings without Rivals" to me. I read it, applied quite a bit of it, and was pretty happy. Admittedly, stuff like that tends to slide away from me when I don't read it, but there's one aspect I've kept in a modified format ( Read more... )

My mother wanted to train my brother and me to clear our plates and utensils off the table at the end of the meal and put them in the sink. (Little goals...) She decided she needed to associate the act of eating with the act of clearing the table, so if we didn't clear the table, she would have us "sit down and pretend to eat," then pick up the plates. I don't know whether the association trick would have worked, but the "pretend to eat" part looked and felt so embarrassing that we learned to clear the table in self-defense.
