Cyclone Yasi

Feb 03, 2011 00:09

My thoughts are with all those impacted by this cyclone. It's the worst we've [Australia] have ever seen to record. My reasons are a little selfish for writing this entry, though. My brother, his wife and my nine month old nephew, John, are in Townsville at this moment, as waves, wind and storms are hitting--right this very minute. Just where the ( Read more... )

Do let us know when they are out of the thick of it! I've several friends in that are and it's scary - just as scary at the crap that coming down on the mid west and east now. Just repeat after me - 'there is no global warming' (the louder) BS!

Well I just received a text from my brother explaining they were alive, well and without power. I don't yet know what the circumstances are up there yet, or even if their house is still standing. Somehow, my brother's old plan of camping out on the beach in case of that happening, might not be the best idea, in re: debris, waves and mutant junkie mosquitoes ;) I can imagine it would be frightening, and can't wait to be able to get a clear enough signal to phone them :)

*sits in 43*C heat for the fourth day in a row* There is no such thing as global warming... hehe.

*whew* so glad everyone is okay! I remember sitting through Hurricane Charley and having the eye go over us. It was a very freaking thing. Hopefully their house won't be too heavily damaged now.

Keep us in the loop!

I just went to watch some of the video coverage of the cyclone and it looks terrifying. The emergency and evacuation measures being taken seem organised though. Have you heard from your family yet or is communication impossible currently?

Well I just received a text from him, not five minutes ago; I am so relieved. I hadn't been able to contact them, their phone was off and I was at wit's end for the entirety of last night and today. They mentioned the power was out there (for safety reasons).

We had a lot of warning on this, so it wasn't so hard to implement the evacuation procedures for the worst case scenario (even if my brother only evacuated a couple of kilometres down the road!)

They are safe, they are safe :)

Very, very relieved to hear this. It is awful when communications are down for obvious reasons, but also we aren't used to having to wait for news anymore and it is just so tense not knowing.

Good luck to you all!

I hope you've heard from them by now, and that they're alright--it's difficult waiting for news. What a terrifying experience a storm like that is.

Thanks for the good wishes; after waiting all this time I've finally got a message from him saying he's alright. I'd been on tenterhooks all day! I hope the clean-up isn't too bad after the cyclone settles down.

You must feel so relieved! My mother in law lives in St. Maarten in the Carribean, and during hurricane season we always keep an eye on the weather maps. She's been there over 20 years and weathered two very bad ones--my husband had to go down and help with the clean up afterwards. It's not easy but it gets done.
