After an absence of many months I stroll onto lj to discover I missed another giant shitstorm splattering across internet fandom.  This time it started with the 'people of color' rather than the radfems; something called "Race Fail 09" that then spread into Star Trek.  It's got it all: wild nonsense on all sides, willing blindness, desperate hunger ( Read more... )

I didn't finish Iron Council. I got about 2/3 of the way through before I realized I had no idea what the hell was going on. Shame, because I liked all of Mieville's books up till that one.

It was interesting enough, but I generally find his endings pretty inconclusive. that's his style, I guess. All I have left is King Rat.
I really need some fresh literature.

Tempting as it was, I stayed out because I learned my lesson during and after the whole "allecto" affair. I doubt you have to worry, however. I suspect your friends are generally both reasonable and constructive, two words not applicable to these posters. Add intelligent and articulate to that and you can have an actual discussion, one where you can learn things from people of differing opinions and alternate viewpoints. Tis sad. The quality of debate in this country is very low.
On a different note, we went and heard Solidad O'Brian(sp?) give a lecture out at Duke. That was fun, and gave us plenty to talk about the rest of the night. I'm kicking myself that we don't take better advantage of these things. We've got 3 big universities, they bring in lots of people, and it's free. Shit, L and I's favorite thing is to see something, then talk about it at a bar for hours.
