We gave up at the end of season 1, though I was personally quite happy to give up after the first episode or two - neither the books nor the TV series have really appealed to me at all. I suspect much of it comes down to the fact that as you say, there's no real emotional involvement with the characters.

Flawed characters are one thing, but these are not flawed characters, they are almost universally vile and disgusting people that it is almost impossible to relate to, and he kills characters so randomly and often that you have no desire to become attached to them.

There seems to be a big drive at the moment, led by HBO, to make TV as violent, disgusting and sexual as possible. It is quite likely that these do actually sell well (and HBOs viewing figures definitely support it), but I'd far prefer to see something intelligent, with characters I can relate to.

With so much fantasy and sci-fi literature out there, I wish they'd choose something better to convert, as there's much better out there.
