How do you come up with your character names?
I'm immensely obsessed with naming characters, but a lot of it just comes out of instinct, to be honest. I have mad lists of names, behindthename.com and babynames.com are on my bookmarked webpages, but so much of it is just what I'm feeling, what seems appropriate, what seems fun. Sometimes it comes from other books or movies I've read - sometimes I name characters after minor, minor characters in something else, or give them a last name that hints at something, a middle name, maybe.
As for Miss Bekki specifically? Well, she actually originated in a book I wrote back in high school, though she's come quite a long way from there now. I had a list of fictional characters I sort of liked or names I sort of liked and one of my friends and I sat down and looked at it, trying to decide which characters should be named what. Bekki originally came from the character of Becky in Sin City, weirdly enough, even though they're really nothing alike; I was just really into that movie at the time (okay, so I still am, really) but I didn't want to completely rip off the name, hence the creative spelling. Also I like creative spellings. Her last name, St. James, was just sort of an instinct thing - like... "what sounds good with Bekki? Oh, okay, that works."
And as for her username? Well... she's a writer, hence the "ink," and she likes to play dress-up, hence the "crinoline." I just started a younger!journal for her, childofsparkles , and well? That sort of comes from the idea that she's born of something fantastic, or she thinks she is, anyway. Cute, albeit slightly naive delusions.
