I think switching your license to NY from another state involves the same testing etc. regardless of whether or not your original license is expired. If you don't want to deal with all of that, you can just get a NY ID card for bars and airports and such.

If your mom lays a guilt trip on you, let me know and when I see her in Cleveland I'll have the women at the Nickel hold her down while I kick her ass. ;)
