24 Hours
Once upon a time, in the middle of a busy city, lived a young girl by the name of Linie. She grew up in a mansion with 24 rooms, 24 cars, 24 servants and 24 closets filled with clothes, toys and books. This decade-old girl might have had 24 of nearly everything, but she had no brothers, sisters or friends.
Linie was used to her daily routine of waking up, bathing, dressing, then being fed by five servants, followed by six hours of home schooling. The rest of the day was free for her to play, sleep and do anything else she wanted. She was also used to seeing her parents for only two hours of everyday.
This little girl was the type who refused any form of attention from her servants. Apart from them being there to cook for her, clean the house, tutor her, drive her to places and follow her every whim, they were not allowed to play with her, talk to her or interact with her. Only two people could do these things and those were her parents.
Linie enjoyed spending time with her mother and father although this time was very limited. Wealthy businessmen and CEO’s of their own companies, Linie’s parents couldn’t leave their jobs to play with their ten-year-old. Instead, they tried to compensate by buying her all the latest toys, gadgets and clothes.
One day and for the rest of the next several weeks, her parents stayed home. Much to Linie’s disappointment, they did not play with her. Her father didn’t bring out his old classical CD’s and start dancing with her in the living room and her mother didn’t help dress up her new Barbie dolls. This time, the two were preoccupied with a little bundle of joy. Linie had gotten a new baby brother.
Each of the 24 servants thought this was good news for the new big sister since now she had acquired a new playmate. Linie was excited at first, until she realized that instead of carrying her and giving her piggy back rides, her father was busy changing her brother’s dirty diaper. This was even worse than her parents being at work. This time, the two hours they’d spend with her everyday was reduced to 5 minutes.
When her parents went back to work, and Linie had no choice but to face her “little bother,” as she liked to call him, she found herself dreaming up plots on how to get rid of the tiny boy wrapped in blue blankets. She thought of feeding him icky smashed carrots and she thought of taking away his favourite stuffed toy but nothing would really make him go away.
As she stood by his crib one morning, trying to think of another way to send him away forever, she watched the once sleeping baby stir, open his eyes and look at her, smiling. He reached for her and she reached back, returning his smile. That day she had just realized that although she didn’t have the full two hours from her parents, she now had another set of 24 - she had 24 hours with her baby brother.
