Reach Out and Read...with Dogs!

I have to tell you what Bilile and I did today because it was so much fun!

We were invited to participate in a promotion for Reach Out and Read at the local Border's bookstore this morning.  I hadn't heard of this program before, but what a great program!  The doctors who participate give books to kids when they come in for their regular checkups ( Read more... )

It really was a lot of fun!

The kids loved it. One little girl said to me, about Billie: can I just pretend she's mine for now?

I know! I wish I could take a dog to every signing I ever do.

You should write dogs into your books so it'll be thematically critical to have dogs at your signings.

AWwwwwwww! I *love* that idea! It sounds like so much fun ~ books and dogs, what a great combination. :D I'm so glad you got to do that.

(A is supposed to read for 20 min every afternoon for homework. He's a good reader, but he has no patience and fusses about it all the time. I've been having him read out loud to Sadie and that has made such a difference. His confidence and patience have grown by leaps and bounds and I think it's become a special time for both of them. She seems to enjoy the quiet attention. Of course, he's reading her Dodie Sable's 101 Dalmations, so maybe Sadie just likes the story. :P)

Yes. I mean, I was happy to do it and I always like taking my dogs places, but the kids were just so delighted to pet the dogs and to sit their and read.

Plus, the toddlers, which of course we never see at the hospital were just a riot.

Cool! Dori does this, too, at the public library here. She's done presentations on it, too. Sounds like fun!

Oh, yeah, this would be a perfect fit for Dori!

Also, the person who originally contacted me is a retired librarian who knows that I'm a writer. She said the library would probably be very interested in doing a book party when the time came and would arrange for books and things. Which, duh! I'd never thought of doing something with the library.

Oh yeah, do count on the library! Those librarians can be super motivated.
