2 Tutorials!!
Wow My first ever tutorials. Woo hoo!
I use PSP 8 to do my icons.
We are going from this:
to this:
Start out with your base:
Duplicate and Sharpen once >> set to soft light
Duplicate sharpened >> set to screen
Duplicate again >> set to screen at 60
Next we take THIS Gradient. Set to Darken.
Duplicate gradient twice. Set both to Soft Light
Next take a copy of your sharpened base and put it on top >> set to screen
Duplicate that and set to Overlay. Desaturate and raise the lightness to 20
That's it for the coloring! As far as the text - I took the "rounded rectangle" and flood-filled it with the color #D4D8CE. Then I used the font "Violation" to write the words.

Now we are going from this:

Start out with your base copied and pasted onto a 100x100 white base:
Next I take THIS gradient, set to Exclusion at 70
Next copy your base and sharpen it. Bring it to the top and set it to screen
Duplicate the layer and set it to screen
Duplicate the layer again and set it to Soft Light
I made a new layer and used THIS brush (I'm sorry, I don't remember who made it) - and in white stamped it at the top and bottom, just enough to make the ragged border around the picture.
Finally I did the text in #808080 in Kingthings Trypewriter
