D's Aunt Mildred died this evening. She was 96. Her last few years were not exactly quality time. She was the oldest of five sisters, three of whom survive her: Jean, Esther (my M-in-L), and Anne. Well, they did a bang-up job at Mildred's memorial service. The Church of the Reformation (Lutheran) was a big part of Mildred's life, and she was important to the church. At least 15 people gave remembrances of her at the service. (Boy, those Lutherans make a big deal out of their services. Interminable. And some of the hymns were the aesthetic equivalent of Dr. Pepper jingles, just less catchy.) Esther and Jean were there and spoke eloquently; the ceremony made them feel a lot better. It's nice to know that people really do remember the good parts and cherish them. It would have been grossly unfair to have the last several of Mildred's 96 years define her.
