I dunno... While on the one hand it harkens back to the good ole days of D20 goodness... I've been spoiled by the numerous systems where random chance doesn't wind up gimping you with a Mage who gets killed by a house-cat falling on them.

Though without knowing the system I couldn't recommend anything outside of assigning a base number of points and adding requirements and restrictions so things remain balanced but allow for some wiggle room.

The listed are the only choices. No point based system.

A description of Pathfinder can be found here. It is a fork of the 3.5 rules.

Ultimately, the beginning stats should be a means to an end. The better the stats are, the less the GM/DM should have to worry about greasing the playability of earlier adventures. When I GM, I want the players to worry about their characters dying because they make stupid choices, not because they have shitty stats.

Of the choices, Standard is the best for what I like (where stats are just a thing you use to base your roleplaying off of).

Also, I also enjoyed the Pluses/Minuses of Unearthed Arcana where you could give yourself a negative to add a positive. Something like, he smells bad, but its because he eats too many onions and that gives him more stamina.
