Track 7. Second best is never enough // You'll do much better baby on your own (Madonna - ‘Express Yourself’)
Cameron almost bowled Chase over as he exited Exam Room #3 and said goodbye to his current patient. “I need to speak to you,” she said tersely and pushed him back into the room, slamming the door closed behind them. “Is it true? Was Rogue pregnant?”
Chase stared at her, stunned. “I… um… yes. She was. Who told you?” he asked. He didn’t mean it to come out sounding so accusatory. Truth of the matter was, he was just worried who she had heard it off because very few people actually knew about it. At least, very few people at PPTH.
“Foreman,” Cameron said bluntly, her arms folded so tightly across her chest, her knuckles were white. “Why didn’t you tell me? Did you think I would spread it around?”
“No!” Chase protested immediately and went to take her hand, but she pulled away roughly. “It wasn’t like that, Allison. We…” He trailed off, at a loss for the right words.
Cameron’s lips were tight as she regarded him, not sure whether she wanted to scream at him or slap him. She thought they were done with the deep, dark secrets. And even if they weren’t, this was the sort of thing she’d always hoped he could talk to her about. “Did she get an abortion?” she asked evenly.
Chase’s eyes flashed angrily. “What?! Fuck no! What the hell, Cameron?” he snapped. He frowned at her, taking a small pacing step back from her. “She lost it.” Pain edged his words and caused him to avert his eyes. “It all happened so quickly. We didn’t have time to process it, let alone share the news…” He looked up at her, trying to catch her reaction. “I’m sorry.”
“When? When did she lose it? I live with you. You both went through a pregnancy and miscarriage right under my nose and you’re sorry you didn’t have time to tell me? Were you ever going to tell me?” Cameron asked bitterly. “Or was it none of my business?”
“It wasn’t a miscarriage,” Chase said, putting his fingers up to his forehead as a migraine threatened. “She lost it when she was hurt. She was beaten so bad they- they-” He choked up and couldn’t finish the sentence.
Cameron shook her head and looked away as tears welled up in her eyes. “Why couldn’t you tell me something like this? Some best friend, Chase.”
“It was too painful!” Chase cried, throwing a hand up. “Alright? It was hard enough trying to cope with the fact we lost our baby! Our own flesh and blood and it died!”
Cameron turned away before he could see her face, grabbing hold of the door handle and pulling it open to leave. Truth was, she felt faint and had to get out of there before he realised. “Whatever, Chase.” It came out hoarsely and she tried to escape but a bunch of student doctors passed and blocked her path.
“Allison! I’m sorry!” Chase said helplessly. “I didn’t think. We just needed to get through it and try and put it behind us! I didn’t make a conscious decision to not tell you, I just-”
Cameron held up her hand, her back still to him. “Forget it. I know where I stand.” Before anything else could be said, she disappeared out into the Clinic, the crowd swallowing her up before Chase could protest further.
