I forgot to report on the eventual outcome of my letter to the HR department. They warned everybody at the management meeting and then had private meeting with all the departments reminding them about company policy. They so know it was me that wrote the letter. I am happy to hear that it was brought to everyone's attention at the management meeting. You definitely did the right thing.

And go for the raise. Worst they can do is say No. :-)
