Quietly she took a drink of her tea and stared at one of her plants. Her babies, as she liked to call them. Each one had a name and card, she would sing to them, prune them, and help them grow anyway she could. Slowly she closed her eyes and started to wonder, the term baby rolling around in her head like a small song.
She knew, if she ever had a child, what she would name them.
Jude, Joyce, Marc, Job. All were good biblical names; and one for her grandmother, just because she hated the name Joyce.
Swiftly the opportunities flashed before her eyes, choices that could have been made, like crossroads that led her life down a different path.
If she had never started singing- She would probably work in business, like her aunt intended.
If she had never met Marni- Life would have been a lot less interesting.
If she hadn’t met Rotti- She, she didn’t know where she would be, not here, not LA… She would have left, gone east, or north… probably still singing in night clubs and barely making it by.
The next option was too much to ask, to even question, but still it ran through her mind.
If Nathan had proposed-
She had an idea of what would have happened, figured it out over nights of thinking about it late at night. She would have said yes. They would have married, and so would have Rotti and Marni. They might’ve adopted, or even had children of their own. He would have cheated on her, and she would have known. But- Marni may have still been alive, and so much of this would never have happened. They would have become a famous four, Rotti wouldn’t have disowned him, and she wouldn’t be under such a severe contract.
But would she have been happy?
She wanted to say yes, that she would have accepted her friend’s flaws, and have been content to play second string. But that doesn’t mean much… Perhaps he would have left her any way; their passion was so strong… Marni still might’ve died, and she still couldn’t conceive.
At least, with the way it was… she had her plants.
