so how does one who doesn't require "pads" know if wings are or are not preferred? or is it more a matter of necessity rather than preference? are wings like guns in that it's better to have them and not need them, rather than need them and not have them? but what if you have them and don't need them? are they less comfortable and therefore less

Also, I applaud you for not wanting to make a profit of this stuff. Breaking even makes it a-ok with me. If you were always worrying about making a buck, I think it'd really take the love out of it for you.
