I actually like those kind of endings, it's not overly cliche! My *cough*uncompleted*cough stories tend to go for that kind of ending, where her/his issues are realistically resolved. They go on their separate ways, continue on with their life. I mean they have history together but that's just it, a history. Nothing more.
But don't get me wrong. Sometimes it does drives me crackers if character A and character B don't end up together~
Oh I've already read that. I kind of like that ending actually. By the way this is the story by Penelope right? You should read her other stories as well, Rough Petals. I'm currently reading The Rabbit Hole. So far so good!
Oh I recommend; The Rules of Engagement by juvanderhall Brier Wood - cu-kid (this is rather lengthy though. but I like it)
