Seriously, I can't imagine why people still get stick. We do have the technology for vehicles to automatically shift for us!
The car does sound pretty totalled. Very rarely will damage bad enough to blow the airbags result in a salvageable car. However, I do think if you search around for sale ads and so, you might find a dinky car for not much money. When the economy gets bad, sometimes things end up on a really good sale.
I second the idea of getting a 'dinky' car for not much money. Just to get through a few weeks or months, you could buy basically a clunker (as long as it runs decently) for maybe as low as several hundred bucks if you're lucky. If it craps out in several weeks... no real big loss, but in the mean time it would be a way to get around.
