First, we're trying to find funding for my position for another year. The Library Foundation wants examples from teachers of how the program has helped their students. I sent out a plea and a teacher sent this back. The funny thing is that I had to cut this school because of their high test scores and she STILL wrote this.

To Whom It May Concern:

I am an unfortunate teacher that got cut out of the Books 2 U program for the 2004 school year and I wanted to be heard about the great loss that my classroom has felt.

Books 2 U is the first program that I have worked with that has truly spent Multnomah County tax dollars well. I have taught for 17 years in the PPS schools and my classes have been involved in hundreds of reading motivational programs but this program really did provide the children with current and motivating literature.

The presenters who did the book talks were so well prepared for promoting the books that the students begged to have her come and bring new books every day. Even though it was a month wait, the students were always trying to predict if she would bring the sequel to a series that she had introduced or the latest alphabet book. My students were so attentive each and every time that there was no student in the room who wasn't fully engaged in the presentation.

The extremely good preparation by the presenters made not only the students come to life and make them want to read the books, it lit a fire in me as well by seeing the joy it brought the students. If you think how little time educators have to review the new books that are being published daily, it seems sensible to have the county library system review and present books in schools monthly.

Every student wanted to read the copies of the books that were left for us to use in the classroom until the end of the school year. This program touched on all genres in literature and its immediate accessibility to books makes the program exciting for all students in the classroom. After the presenter finished doing their book talk the next moment the books that they had talked about would be available for checkout which was the unique part of the program. I would dearly love to see this program reinstated as it was one that really worked for all concerned.

How nice is that?

Measure 30 goes down. Another sad day for Oregon. And yet again I ask myself what's wrong with people. They want schools to be funded, they want social services but they refuse to pay for them. What do you think taxes are for, people?

I had an interesting visit with my therapist last night. We had a long talk about my intense desire to travel coupled with my even more intense fear of travel. As some of you know, I've been planning a trip to Oaxaca, Mexico to go to a Spanish-language school. I keep putting it off (with good reason) but I'm so afraid that I will put it off and put it off and I'll wake up one day and I'll be 65.

June-July seems like a good time and Beth (my therapist) thinks I should just book a ticket so I have to go. I think I might. Eeek! What do you all think? Book the ticket and force myself to go?
