The Peoples of Kitt'Onn

Some five thousand years after the arrival of the Wraith and departure of the Ancients, a war broke out upon the planet Kitt'Onn between two factions.
  • The Kitt'Ei were a deeply religious people, believing in the absolute moral authority of their sacred scrolls - The Scrolls of the Ancestors. They believed in the primacy of men, the reverence of the elder, and the importance of monogamy above all else. They also believed that interaction with other cultures should be limited to trade in specific goods.
  • The Kitt'Arr were biologically identical to the Kitt'Ei, but held a different set of moral beliefs. They were less obsessed with the detail of the wording of the scrolls and more concerned with over-arching themes. Their culture allowed women to hold positions of power and while endorsing monogamy provided no stiff penalties for the breaching of a relationship. In addition, they welcomed immigrants and refugees from other worlds to join their community.
Following a hundred years of warfare, a truce was reached and the Kitt'Ei left the world of Kitt'Onn to establish a new homeworld. Unfortunately, this was not an end to the hostilities.

Feeling a moral obligation to 'enlighten' the Kitt'Arr, the Kitt'Ei sent delegations to Kitt'Onn once every ten years. These delegations were promptly driven out once they were discovered (out of a justified fear of violent repercussions), and no more thought given. When the third such delegation was driven out, their leader was heard to threaten death and servitude to the Wraith if they did not convert and reform their ways. The next day, the Wraith arrived and initiated a culling far more destructive than any in Kitt'Arr memory. The Kitt'Arr blamed the Kitt'Ei, and sent word that any Kitt'Ei found on Kitt'Onn would be executed on sight.

This did not discourage the Kitt'Ei, and they merely began dressing their delegations as members of a neutral world. In response, the Kitt'Arr instigated a screening policy for all new trading partners:
  • All those who wished to trade with the Kitt'Arr need undergo a ritual of 'welcoming'. The two highest ranked males in a trade delegation must engage in sexual intimacy with each other to prove their willingness to be flexible trading partners.
No Kitt'Ei would perform the ritual, as they were bound at the age of 3 in a betrothal to a member of the opposite gender. A Kitt'Ei would kill themselves before violating the bond to their betrothed.

The tradition continues to this day, though the reasoning behind it has become lost to time. The Kitt'Arr know only that they are preventing a terrible enemy from moving amongst their people. Unknown to them, the Kitt'Ei were killed almost 1,500 years ago in a massive culling.

Addendum (Year 7 of the Great Wraith Awakening):
This race has been nicknamed by the new denizens of Atlantis as the 'Aliens Made Us Do It' Culture. Reasoning behind the moniker is unknown.
