I'm doing pretty well now with everything except clothes, and things I'm going to have to buy for myself (like baby laundry detergent and diapers). I still need socks, blankets, clothes of all types (birth-year), a diaper bag... Over the course of the first year of her life I'm going to need a LOT of things I don't have (bibs, sippy cups, etc.) but I'm just trying to get the essentials down!
You know, maybe it's because I'm a man, or maybe it's because I'm from frugal New England, or maybe it's because I'm a ludite, or some combination of things, but when I hear about people going out and buying gazillions of dollars worth of stuff to prepare for a baby, I just wonder how--HOW!--mankind managed to birth tens of hundreds of thousands of generations without a BabyGap?
I tried on my wishlist to be as frugal and reasonable as possible, save for the stroller (which it turns out I don't really need; someone is giving us a stroller) and the excessive list of blankets (I only need a few). Baby things is one of those areas where it should be easy to accumulate hand-me-downs or at least, consignment/thrift store items. They're often barely used and everyone needs to get rid of them.
In fact, thus far we've outfitted the nursery completely for about $60.

I feel strongly on that one. Only my first was born in a hospital, and I'll never give birth in one again if I can help it.
