Nice dialogue! I found myself wondering if there was more than best-friendship there, and it was cool to see the friendship progressing through the years.
Thank you for reading! As I was writing it, I definitely considered a few different ways it could end, depending on how light or dark I wanted to go, and what you picked up on was a potential that I saw too!
I do the riffle shuffle, too, although I am far from a card sharp.
Like the other commenters, I enjoyed the progression of this relationship, the implication being that they play cards together often and confide in each other.
Wow... reminded me of the few talks I had with my Pop while he taught me Rummy, Spades, Pinochle and some forms of poker. It was always an invitation to talk when the cards came out. I forgot this until reading this piece. Thank you for that. :)
Aw, that's lovely and it makes me happy that it reminded you of such a great memory! This piece is definitely rooted in my real life - the summer before high school my best friend and I spent every single day playing cards and snacking on potato chips and onion dip lol. We still occasionally played in the years after that, just talking and playing and snacking, and even though we don't talk very often anymore, it's a fond memory I'll always associate with her.
