Ahh yes, there are so many things that don't keep to the books etc (though hilariously the one that keeps closest to the book is the least popular apparently?!) but I still love them so much!
I enjoyed the books as a child but I never really got into the movies. Like most commenters here I think it is perfectly reasonable for the films to not have the same material as the book, the difference in formats necessitates the change in context. The question I find myself asking is; if there hadn't been the books to provide a different context, would this movie still be fun? In regards to the Harry Potter films I think that is true.
I hadn't realized Potter fans had so many quibbles with the movies, though there is always difficulty in translating books to the screen. Really, considering all of the effects and weirdness in the world captured in the first movie, that was pretty damn amazing!
I could not for the life of me translate "Portkey," since I could not figure out who the other half of that would be! I'm more of the old-school where we would just list names like Kirk/Spock instead of trying to combine the two names. Though I did, just now, in my head. And it went to a very bad place.
One just cannot expect the movie to be as good as the book. It takes us until dawn to savor a good book (I definitely remember going to school on half an hour of sleep after reading HP5), how could we expect to have the same thrilling over little more than 100 minutes? O_o Harry Potter is also one of the few books that I've read in Spanish and English, since it came out before I could string a sentence together in English, much less muddle through a whole book.
I liked the movies. I still feel that they did a good job of the casting of the three main roles, and that they created an amazing friendship on screen. And wasn't that the important thing to bring over from the original source?
(Though, yeah, Lily's brown eyes. I could hear fans around the world groaning at that.)
And isn't it great to be able to share the 'classics' with the moppets? *grin*
