Icon Tutorial 002. Luke Skywalker.
Before you copy my style, step by step, please note that I don’t like you. I’ve never liked copy-cats and I’ll never like them. Be creative and unique! Learn something from this tutorial but please don’t copy. Thank you and enjoy!
I use Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 but I think you should be able to figure this out anyway.
First crop the image. I use
kaiba’s Star Wars screen caps <333
This has been cropped, resized to 100x100 pixels and sharpened. I’ve also lowered the saturation and added some brightness and contrast. I just kind of remove some colors before I start working on my icons. It’s easier to get the color you want when the picture is already gray-ish.
Duplicate the image. (Go to Layer > Duplicate Layer…)
Then go to your layers and put the duplicated image to Screen (100%).
It should look something like this now:
Yeah really bright but just be patient. :D
Then create a new layer on top of the Luke ones. Fill it with this color:
(The color is #00004D) . It doesn’t really matter if it isn’t the exact same color I used. Just make sure it’s really dark blue.
Put it to Exclusion (100%).
Then go down a little in your layers and click on the Duplicated Luke. Go to Layer > New > Layer Via Copy. (We’re just creating another Luke base.) Move it on top of all layers and change it to Soft Light (100%).
The result should look like this:
Now go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Levels (Mode. Normal, Opacity 100%) and click OK.
Now change the brightness and colors a little to make the image darker and a little bit more green and blue. My RGB was something around 0,74-0,80, Red 0,75-0,78, Green 0,90-0,95 and Blue 1,5-2. It’s hard to say exactly how they were.
The result should look something like this:
Now move the layer we just made and put it right below the dark blue layer if it isn’t there already. Now you should have from bottom to up Background, Duplicated Luke (Screen 100%),
this weird looking layer on top of it
,
then the dark blue one (exclusion 100%), another Luke copy (soft light 100%).
Create a new layer on top of all the layers and fill it with black. Change it to Color 34%.
Then use this gradient:
Put it to Multiply 23%.
Then I used this texture made by
torche I had to use my eraser brush as a low opacity to make Luke’s face brighter. The texture was too dark and visible on his face.
Here’s the result:
Leave it to Normal, Opacity 37%.
Then use these gradients in the following order:
(Overlay 57%)
(Multiply 20%)
(Darken 35%)
Then last but not least, another texture by
torche!
Do the same thing with this one. Erase some from his face and voila!
(Soft Light 74%)
Result:
Then add some text and a border and whatever. Happy iconing!
The first part of my tutorial (blue layers and exclusion and that stuff all the way to the black layer) was not my invention. I do not own that part! It's from some other tutorial.
Arwen tutorial coming up!
