So, pardon my nosiness. What happened to Karakura Town in the intervening two years? I assume [insert everyone important here] survived, but if Karakura itself was literally drained of people, how was the catastrophe explained in the living world? (For people who know squat about shinigami and a war in the world of the dead.) Did the survivors scatter to different parts of Japan, or is it possible to play a human character who has, for intents and purposes, relocated to Soul Society, for example? I understand we are to fill in the gaps, but are there any extra guidelines for this?

Of course, and that's a good question. Yes - those people survived, as well as some random people that just didn't need to be eaten or were too far away from the point of the draining. The living world would not know what really happened, but probably assumes some sort of genocide. The lack of bodies will not help prove anything, of course, but they won't have any real evidence to prove otherwise. Two years have passed, and it's still a mystery that no one can explain. I imagine people about the world with some sort of spiritual awareness might think differently, but that's them

So, it's a Tunguska right in the middle of the Tokyo area. That is... kind of awesome and creepy, actually.
Right, thank you. If I do pass muster with Ichigo, then--I don't think anyone's taken up any of his family members yet? That means I kind of have to write around them, right? Which won't be a problem, for me, but it's probably better not to involve them too much on the chance that they get players later on?

Yup, basically :) I guess it's up to the random people out there to decide whether they'd want to venture in it or not, but I'm sure the general consensus would be something like "go in there and you'll die!" even if it's not true.
No one has reserved them yet, no. Writing around them would probably be best for an app, even though his family is a very big part of his life. However, you're more than welcome to add to the history to involve more of his interactions with his family should someone pick them up in the future :)
A month is the longest we would like someone to be on hiatus. If they're gone for a month and don't come back, I'll assume they're not coming back. However, if someone has any special circumstances for being gone for longer than a month, then they can talk to me about it and we will work something out.
So, as a general rule: a month, but we'll take it as a case by case basis.
Excuse me, ummm, if one's apping for a character that was previously in the game is it required to read up on this character's past history here? Just curious, I figure you might want to keep continuity the same and all since it's a one-verse deal but I have to check for myself. o/
Yes, we do want to maintain as much continuity as possible with previous characters who have been dropped. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. :)
