Character name: Kurapica Kuruta
Fandom: Hunter x Hunter
Timeline: Post-anime. In other words: after the "Greed Island" Arc, where he's still working for Nostrade as a bodyguard.
Age: 17
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: In the beginning, Kurapica used two covered Tanto blades connected by a rope, but lately, he's used these weapons less and less with the development of his Nen - or "Qi" - ability. Kurapica is of the Materialization group, which means he specifies in conjuring objects out of Nen. In his case, Kurapica has decided to conjure chains, represented by the
chain "glove" he created from Nen kept on his right hand. Each chain attached to each of his fingers possesses a specific ability. The chain on his little finger (the "Judgment Chain") has a stake on the end, and the chain can wrap around the victim's heart. Kurapica places two limitations on the victim (ex. "You cannot make contact with a member of the Phantom Troupe" and "You cannot tell anyone about my ability"), and if that victim violates the limitations, the victim instantly dies. This ability can only be used if Kurapica's eyes are scarlet.
The chain on Kurapica's thumb (the "Holy Chain") is shaped like a cross, and it can cure small wounds. The chain on his middle finger (the "Chain Jail") is shaped like a hook and can wrap itself around his enemies, restricting their movements and Nen completely. Chain Jail possesses extreme power, but only because Kurapica increased its power by using the Judgment Chain on himself: he cannot use Chain Jail on anyone other than the Phantom Troupe, or else Kurapica dies. Hence, unless a member of the Phantom Troupe ends up on the S.S. Thor, Kurapica cannot use Chain Jail.
The chain on Kurapica's ring finger (the "Dowsing Chain"), is a chain with a small ball at the end. This chain is used for most of his attack/defense in normal situations, and it can easily be manipulated at high speeds (even blocking several bullets in one scene). The chain also doubles as a kind of "radar": Kurapica can specify something he's looking for, and the chain swings back and forth when he finds what he needs. In this way, it can also be used a lie detector.
Some of these chain abilities are specified to only work when he has scarlet eyes. Through working with his Nen teacher, Kurapica had trained himself to turn his eyes scarlet on his own. The scarlet eyes of the Kuruta clan allows Kurapica to achieve Specialization in the Nen category. In other words, he can utilize every category of Nen available, permitting him to use certain of his chain abilities.
Aside from Nen, Kurapica has shown to be a fighter than can hold his own, even if he's not physically the strongest. He can use blades well (provided he ever obtains any on the S.S. Thor) and shows good stamina, concentration, and agility.
How would they use their abilities?: Kurapica's primary specialization is capture + restriction, though when his eyes are scarlet, he does have the ability to attack and heal well. Kurapica wouldn't use his abilities to attack indiscriminately, however, or to hunt down just anyone. Kurapica prefers not only to treat people fairly, but he when considering engaging anyone, he keeps cautious - or as much as he can. If another person attacks him or his friends, however, he will defend them and himself with little to no hesitation.
Appearance:
1 x
2Kurapica does not have the most masculine or physically strong body, and he knows it and accepts it. In fact, Kurapica is of a height slightly shorter than the average man, and his body frame is more narrow than muscular. He has good stamina and endurance, however, as seen in the Hunter's Exam...but it's often a point against his dignity that he can't lift very heavy objects. Thankfully, his Nen is strong, and in combat, he shows a speed and agility that can often dodge attacks.
Kurapica's eyes are a deep blue-green, though he possesses the distinctive characteristic of the Kuruta clan: eyes that turn a glowing scarlet when emotionally agitated. Kurapica's garments are what appears to be a traditional Kuruta set of clothes, with a simple light shirt and pants underneath a blue-and-orange tabard.
Kurapica has a very feminine face voice, and with his delicate blond hair, confusion about his gender if often understandable. Yes, good luck learning he's a man on your own without having some type of verbal clue.
Personality: It's no secret that Kurapica is the calculating, tactical type, and more often than not, he picks reason over emotion. He exhibits a real knack for learning the information he can, isolating it, inferring new information from the old information (often through process of elimination), and then coming up with a solution. It helps that the guy is a walking encyclopedia: he's collected all of the information he can about various aspects of his world - though in the end, he couldn't track down the Scarlet Eyes or the Phantom Troupe without obtaining the Hunter's license first.
Because of his intellect and skill, Kurapica often ends up in the leadership role, and he does execute the role handsomely when able: Kurapica genuinely cares for the safety of other people. He finds immense value in cooperation: he detests fighting, both verbal and physical, that benefits no one where cooperation might. Though he's not the best at rallying people with emotion, he's organized, efficient, and clear enough to take the reins when prompted. Unfortunately, he's not charismatic enough of a person to win the loyalty of even the loners or the obstinate - but then again, who is? Kurapika works best with the people who work with him and understand his reasoning - like most leaders.
With all of this in mind, it's a wonder he even harbors revenge...or so one might think. At first Kurapica may seem warm and friendly, especially with those he likes, but under the right circumstances, he can act downright cold. This may be as a result of the slaughter of his clan: his yearning for vengeance so fuels him, it consumes him at times. It seems his own desire for exacted justice chokes him; he once considered giving up Killua and Gon, while they were hostages under the Phantom Troupe, just to kill their leader (thankfully, Kurapica didn't). Kurapica takes killing as a last resort, but he will (and has) done it, ruthlessly. Above all, he desires punishment for those he feels deserve it: an ironically passionate, terrifying side of him that few get to or want to see.
Only through determination could Kurapica harbor such a sense of vengeance, and certainly he has it. Very few times does Kurapica back down in the face of some obstacle. He may even attack a problem tenaciously, though his friends and the safety of others still comes first in his mind. You can bet that on the S.S. Thor, he'll try to work out a plan to restore his destroyed world, one way or another. Even if he can't figure out a solution immediately, Kurapica shows a surprising amount of patience - at least, when he's not dealing with Leorio, the Phantom Troupe, or a situation that requires promptness and ferocity.
Background: Kurapica belongs to the now-extinct Kuruta Clan, a group of people that live in obscurity in the Lukso Province of the Hunter x Hunter world. All members of the Kuruta Clan have one known trait in common: when agitated, their eyes turn a deep scarlet color. If a member dies still agitated, that color never leaves their irises. Collectors the world over desire the beauty of these scarlet eyes, but their intensity cannot be replicated. Some years before the start of the series, the Phantom Troupe, a group of notorious thieves and murderers, came and massacred the Kuruta Clan in order to obtain the scarlet eyes. Only Kurapica survived, and so he is the last of his kind. He's since sworn an oath to not only to recover the eyes of his fallen comrades, but also to exact revenge on the Phantom Troupe (also known as the Spiders), even at the cost of his own life. In order to achieve his goal, Kurapica sought to become a Hunter, a job/social classification within the world that allows for special privileges and information.
During the journey to become a Hunter, Kurapica reveals his vast knowledge of the world and his exceptional tactical thinking. He meets Gon, Leorio, and Killua, and the four of them swiftly become friends while enduring the trials of the Hunter exam. Despite how they clash, Kurapica and Leorio are shown to have a close friendship. Kurapica even, at one point, admits he's the last of the Kuruta clan and explains his goals, including his search for the Phantom Troupe. As the exam continues and the group of four advances through test after test, they come more and more into conflict with a participant named Hisoka a.k.a. Evil Clown. Hisoka's loyalties are completely unknown, but because of his lust for battle and his enormous strength and intimidation, Kurapica believes he may have a connection to the Phantom Troupe. In the final stage of the exam, in which the remaining few participants are pitted against each other in one-on-one battles, Kurapica is placed in a fight against Hisoka. After a brief struggle, Hisoka whispers something into Kurapica's ear and surrenders. The whisper causes Kurapica's eyes to turn scarlet, however, implying an intense emotional reaction; later, Kurapica explains that Hisoka whispered, "I know something about the spider." The spider is the symbol of the Phantom Troupe and the group's nickname, so only those close to the group know of this information. Kurapica also never mentioned to Hisoka his seeking the Phantom Troupe.
The final exam allows for all remaining participants to pass except for one: the person who cannot win a single match or who is disqualified. Killua ends up disqualified for killing another participant, so Kurapica, Gon, and Leorio, among a few other participants, end up passing the exam and becoming licensed Hunters. After the exam, Kurapica plans on going off alone to begin searching for a job, but at hearing Gon's plans to get back Killua from the Zaoldyeck Mansion, Kurapica agrees to go with him (along with Leorio). Together, they go through a number of trials in order to reach Killua's family's estate, and the trio reunites with Killua. From that point, their group finally splits in order to pursue their various goals: while Gon and Killua compete at the Celestial Tower for money and training, Kurapica searches for a job to get him closer to the Scarlet Eyes. He fails in his search, however, as the main employer says, "the Hunter exam is not finished for him."
After searching for the answer to the next part of his "exam", he comes across a teacher. This teacher explains to Kurapica "Nen" - something that can be compared to Qi - and how only true Hunters can master its terrifying power. Kurapica learns he is a Materialization user, much to his disappointment: he feels that only with absolute strength can he wipe out the Phantom Troupe. Over the course of training, however, Kurapica masters not only the basics of Nen but a very specialized materialization. Having now learned Nen, Kurapica heads back to the employer, passes the test of recognizing Nen, and lands his first job as a Blacklist Hunter. He is hired as a bodyguard by a Mafia leader named Mr. Nostrade, a man hoping to collect a pair of Scarlet Eyes in the annual underground York Shin auction.
In the midst of this auction, however, the Phantom Troupe arrives in York Shin. They plan to steal every item within the auction, and though they fail to steal the items before another party relocates the items to safety, the Phantom Troupe kills every member participating in one night's auction and single-handedly earn the death-wish of the Mafia community. Kurapica soon gets wind of the Phantom Troupe's activity and becomes consumed with revenge. He goes after their members and even kills one of the group's physically strongest. The revenge-killing haunts Kurapica: for the next several hours, he's in emotional shambles and is seen shut-off from the rest of coworkers in his room or praying to his clan. In the ensuing battle between the Phantom Troupe and reinforcements the Mafia hired, the Phantom Troupe's bloody bodies are found. The Mafia declares them dead, and Kurapica, left with unsatisfied revenge, can only represent Nostrade in bidding for the Scarlet Eyes in the auction. Kurapica wins the Scarlet Eyes for his employer, and he hands them off to his coworkers for safe-keeping. Little does he know, the Phantom Troupe created Nen copies of each of the item up for auction and took the real items for their own. Oblivious to this, Kurapica wanders York Shin until he meets up with Gon, Killua, and Leorio again, regaining some of his spirits.
Before the auction ends, Hisoka sends Kurapica a message. Hisoka has since taken a place in the Phantom Troupe, though he does not place loyalty in the group, as seen with his faked initiation tattoo. Instead, when Kurapica earlier visits him, both Hisoka and Kurapica agree to an alliance. The message Hisoka sends later details the truth of the Phantom Troupe's "demise": the bodies found were actually fake Nen copies, and the Phantom Troupe is still alive. For the death of one of their members and fear that Kurapica may kill them, the Phantom Troupe decides to go after Kurapica. Meanwhile, Kurapica and his friends decide to hunt down the Phantom Troupe to make them pay for their murders.
Through a tactic involving Gon and Killua as bait, Kurapica eventually cuts off the Phantom Troupe's leader, Chrollo, from the rest of his group. Kurapica uses his specifically-designed Nen technique to take away Chrollo's ability to use Nen and contact any members of the Phantom Troupe. Kurapica decides to leave Chrollo stranded alive instead of killing him. The Phantom Troupe move away from York Shin, and Kurapica reconvenes with Gon, Killua, and Leorio. But after the intense stress of his ordeal, Kurapica collapses with fever. Unable to go to a hospital should the Phantom Troupe catch wind of him, Kurapica's friends take him to an abandoned apartment building, where Kurapica struggles to recover. It's soon apparent that his sickness has less to do with the medical than the severe emotional trauma of trying to avenge his fallen clan and killing a member of the Phantom Troupe.
Eventually, Kurapika's sickness subsides, and he comes out of his hallucinations. He stays long enough to make a decent recovery but soon bids his friends goodbye, as he returns to his employer, Mr. Nostrade. The events with the Phantom Troupe still haunt Kurapica's personality, but for the most part, he has returned to being the Kurapika his friends know.
Have you read up on how the game works?: FlamingFerret is the guide plug-in. Three ways to earn cash are: missions!, mooching, or stealing. Kurapica will earn money the hard (and righteous!) way.

/Accidental video
[The screen flickers on. The angle of the camera is obscure: it's close to the ground, and only a downy head of golden hair can be seen. Then, out of the relative silence, a groan. The head stirs. Kurapica slowly drags himself to a kneeling position and cradles his temple. He stares, dumbfounded, at the scenery before him.]
...Where am I?
[Then it starts to dawn on him: you can see it in his expression. Kurapica jolts to a stand and bends into a battle-ready stance. For a few minutes, he observes everything he can from his position. Then, in a barely audible whisper:]
Senritsu.
[If one listened to his whisper intently, they would be able to tell it was a signal - to someone far off, probably not even here in this place. Kurapica waits for the response, but none comes. Instead, he sees his "Nen" chain is not materialized, his only weapon with him, and swiftly creates the chain glove on his right hand. His vision focuses out onto the ground, where he finally takes notice of the PCD.]
A phone? [He picks it up, and his eyes narrow.] It's recording...

He tried to formulate his thoughts on exactly what was happening and how he'd gotten here. His coworkers often wondered how he could stay so level-headed in dire circumstances, but after years of practice, it came easier to him than for, say, Leorio. He breathed in thinly, trying to clear his mind of the panic and the confusion nipping at the edges, threatening to distract him. Before this... he began, struggling to remember with all the detached calculation of a computer, ...I was standing in the Nostrade estate.
Kurapica started with the easiest memories first. Yes, it was a dull, overcast morning, one that he had looked out upon from the upper-story window of the Nostrade mansion. He felt Senritsu's presence not too far off, like a quiet melody in the near-silence of the room, and several halls down behind the door on the left, he knew Nostrade's daughter to be sleeping. She would likely wake up soon, and after procrastinating some time, her father would urge her to try and spin the future again through her Nen ability. She could not, of course: Kurapica suspected that Chrollo had something to do with it, according to rumors on his Nen ability, but Kurapica could not confirm it, anyway. He hoped he would never have to confirm it: the last thing he wanted was to see that man's face again.
That's right: then he had felt Senritsu shiver from behind him. Kurapica turned around to face her, for Senritsu sensed things beyond his capabilities, and she only reacted in such way when she sensed something jarring. He witnessed her wide-eyed expression, her lips parted against large front teeth. "I hear the rumblings of a storm," she said, her voice almost breathless in horror. "Such a terrible sound! It beats so rapidly. There is no time!"
He felt all of his blood turn to ice at her panicked response, and he remembered trying to ask her about it before the worst happened. He did not know the worst until then. He heard a clap of thunder magnified times ten, as if crashing down over his ears. What kind of storm can do this? he remembered asking himself, and he had a flicker of deja vu of the storm during the Hunter Exam. He faced the window again and searched the horizon for signs of the storm's enormity, but he had only time to see a brilliant streak of lightning close against Nostrade's gates.
Then...then the world warped in on itself and turned black. Then he woke up. Beyond the lightning, he could not remember: a bad sign, one that could mean head trauma - or even emotional trauma. The memories yielded little information, other than the existence of a storm before he came here - not much of a help, really. He would have to gather information on this place and hope that he could get the answers to what happened.
