experience and reason

"Our experience is composed rather of illusions lost than wisdom acquired."

Thats really depressing. But also quite true. Maybe that's why it's depressing.

I didn't find it depressing. I think it says wisdom is attainable if you just use your experience/ memory/ logic to prevent irrational, unproductive paths.

One can ALWAYS better themself actively, through learning... knowledge versus wisdom. I don't think Roux excludes that at all.
