I am seriously considering cloth diapering, but it is so expensive to get started. If I decide to do it, I would be using the prefolds with covers, so anyone with experience let me hear about it, the good, the bad....all of it, because i dont want to shell out a ton of money then hate it... Is it convinient, is it gross, what about leakage, laundry ( Read more... )

I've heard it's a lot healthier for the baby. I would definitely cloth diaper, in fact I think it would be awesome to learn how to use a sewing machine and make them myself.

It didn't work out for me, every diaper leaked, so not only was I changing diapers all day, but all his clothes too. Plus all the extra laundry and detergent made me feel bad - so horrible for the environment. They say diaper services are better than doing the wash at home (environmentally), but then there is exhaust from the trucks, so I do not buy it. Not saying disposables are "better" for the environment, but the convenience plus no worse for the environment (IMO) made it a no brainer for me.

Also I have a friend who clothe diapered her first 2, but then her 3rd would get horrible rashes constantly, so she had to switch to disposable....if i were you I would start off small to test it out, don't buy an entire stash to begin with.

i think your friend who had constant leaks and worried about detergent waste may hvave needed a few tips and tricks.

I have the breakdown of costs (including washing) and you use a MINISCULE amount of detergent on cloth diapers.
too much causes leaks and rashes.

perfumey paper diapers gross me out now, i can freaking smell a baby when it pees from a mile away. yuck
