I'm so glad that you're willing to try something new. It is a lot of fun, but it's also a lot of hard work. You have to be committed to it. There's no half-assing, because your team will kill you. :P
I've been a cheerleader for the better part of a decade, and a coach for 4 years. The key to being a good cheerleader is dedication. Since you have such a low skill level, you'll have to start working at it five days or so a week. That way, by tryout time, you will be in shape. Are you friends with anyone on poms? If so, ask them for their help. I'm sure they would be more than willing to give you instruction, and no dvd can replace actual experience with the team.
I also have a cheerleader's workout that I give to all my kids...I could scan it for you if you would like. :)
i just started this year, and what i do is just try to exercise 3-5 days a week. try the exercises from magazines, those really help me.
like your other comment said, try to find someone that does it, so they can teach you some cheers & names you'll need to know when you start. [by names i mean like- high v, low v, touchdown, that kind of thing]
