If you end up liking Everything Is Illuminated, I recommend you give Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close a try. I haven't finished it yet, but I love the main character in this book, little 9-year-old Oskar Schell. Plus the fact that it takes place in New York City gives it a more personal and familiar feel.
Wow, that's some rec. It would take a lot to make me want to journey to the 1870's but perhaps I shall. I've gotten so many lovely recs from you that I have books sitting in a pretty little stack next to my cozy chair.
With that kind of recommendation, I may just bump it up. How did it rank among your favorites the first time you read it and now that you've given it another perusal?
This ranks up in my top 5 at least. It is better after the perusal b/c I know how it ends so I can pay attention to all of the clues he lays.
It's always worrisome recommending books, especially ones I love. What if you don't love it like I do? What if your estimation of me goes down when you think the book is total rubbish? The book isn't perfect, but the one quibble I have, that the dialogue might be a bit too clever for the time period its set in, is minor because I love everything else about it too much.
What other books that i've recced that you are reading? *worries some more* :)
My opinion of you would not waiver based on a book rec. :)
I picked up Pride and Prejudice again because of you. You and several others had Wicked in their lists. I enjoyed that book immensely but not so much his other work, Lost. I'm currently reading My Sister's Keeper a little at a time because it can make me cry so easily. I've also got The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay waiting in the wings.
That's an interesting note, about the level of cleverness within a time frame. I'll have to wait and see.
I very rarely send a book back or regret a purchase. When I think back on it, the last book I did not finish was something by Anne Rice. I used to be a voracious reader before life picked me up in a whirlwind. Now that it's all settling down, I've got a lot of catching up to do and am very grateful to those of you on my flist that put out recs and observations.
Oh, I don't think I could. I want to, without a doubt. But to keep the characters and story 'in canon' I'd have to change my style, i.e. not be t00by at all. And, not describe the lurvin'. I'd rather just use my imagination.
Perhaps, and this is just pure conjecture here...might help you to stretch yourself, grow as a writer, and go outside your comfort zone, while still writing something you enjoy that you dont' have to do exhaustive research on. Just a theory. :-)
I've bought books on recs less than that. I'll have to check it out, but I have about 15 *other* books staring me in the face that I have to get to first.
It's a quick read. At least for me b/c I can't put it down. But you aren't going to have to wade through a bunch of description and exposition that has nothing to do with the story. Everything that is said and mentioned in one way or another, ties into the mysteries of the story.
yeah! So few people have ever read MCS stuff. I just picked up his latest, Wolves Eat Dogs, which is an Arkady Renko novel. I'm only 10 pages in and I like it so far. He is a great character.
I've never been able to find MCS early stuff (before Gorky Park). Even Rose is difficult to find.

I'll be sure to give Rose a try, too.
