In Sense and Sensibility, Mrs. Jennings is telling Elinor about the elder Miss Steele letting slip to Fanny Dashwood that Edward is engaged to Lucy. During Mrs. Jennings recitation, she starts talking about Nancy. I had no idea who Nancy was b/c I thought the elder Miss Steele was named Anne. So, I asked in the Sense and Sensibility forum over at www.pemberley.com. Someone there told me that Nancy was a nickname for Anne.
My guess (and this comes from the Anne of Green Gables series as well as Jane Austen) is that Anne becomes Nan and then that morphs into Nancy as a sort of pet-name. I don't know why, really. The Anne to Nan thing comes to me from one of Anne Blythe's daughters. Her name is Anne, but to keep her from being confused with her mom, everyone refers to her as Nan.
Still, I'd never made the Nancy/Anne connection in S&S, so thanks for teaching me something today, CC.
