logansrogue is just brilliant.
I want to change to a P&P mood theme, which I have saved on my computer, but I'm too lazy to load all those pics into photobucket.
One of the defenses of Ron's behavior is that 'he's just a teenage boy.' It seems that should exonerate him from how horrible he acts and should be reason enough for those of us that don't like him to 'see the light.' I'm sorry, I don't buy that all teenage boys act like him. Harry doesn't act like him. Neville doesn't act like him. Sure, they have their teenage moments of inmaturity. I guess their's don't grate on me as much as Ron's does. What gets me the most is his constantly bringing attention to him being poor. I think this quote sums Ron's character up pretty well:
"I don't blame Fred and George for trying to make some extra money. Wish I could. Wish I had a Niffler."
Here's my problem with Ron: he does nothing at all to better his life. He is completely content being a loser. After all, if he tried, he might fail. It's easier to just not try. It's easier to complain about not having any money than to do something about it. Fred and George are trying - they are working towards a goal. They aren't wishing for a Niffler to do the work for them. Ron considers doing something, taking action "Wish I could." But then he thinks better of it. There's an easier way - "Wish I had a Niffler." Hey Ron here's a solution for you: Get a Fucking Job over school break and earn some money. Your parents would probably appreciate it. It would show that you aren't waiting around for someone to take care of you.
He almost does it in OotP by going out for the Quidditch team. But when it gets hard, when he has to work at being a good player what does he want to do? Quit. Yes, he stuck with it, but only because Angelina wouldn't let him quit. He'll probably be more motivated next year, but only because he had a small measure of success iin the last match. If things get tough for him the first thing he'll want to do is turn tail and run.
Here's what Ron needs to do for me to like him:
- get a job to earn some money over the summer or stop complaining about being poor
- hand in his prefect's badge because he sucks at it or take the job seriously and do the job correctly
- if he has feelings for Hermione, do something about it
- improve his table manners; eat as much as you want, but for heaven's sake, don't talk with your mouth full
You may wonder what brought this small rant on. Re-reading GoF has shown me that my dislike for him started in that book and grew in OotP. Every chapter I like him less and less.
