Kansas City. I remember a light dusting of ash on the ground when walking to school.

I haven't got a clue. I know my dad has a baby food jar with ash in it...but I don't remember if he got it in Phoenix or McMinnville. That was either just before or just after my mom died...and until I was about 16, I don't remember a whole hell of a lot. I think it's selective memory...and I'm good with that. LOL

I was only coming up on my 6th birthday, but I remember it pretty darn distinctly. I had been watching TV pretty obsessively, because I wanted to know what was happening. We didn't hear it or get ash that first time, but we did in some of the later eruptions.

We were in Portland and the ash was horrible. Timmy Miller made a killing cleaning out people's gutters. I think we had at least one day off of school. Dad was continually shoveling and sweeping, both at home and at the church.

I don't remember ash in Spokane. Just the mountains of it after they dredged the Toutle River.

Years later, Tom proudly showed me his little tourist vial filled with genuine Mt. St. Helens ash. I was sadly unimpressed.

Let's see, I would have been 11 and in Clarksdale, MS where I heard about the eruption but that was the extent of its impact on my life.
