That was very brave of you, in this world where people tend to casually watch why crimes happen right in front of them. It's comforting to know that people still care enough when they see a wrong and attempt to fix it without asking what's in it for them. Brava!
However...
The former prosecutor in me first read your story and thought 'he could have been killed, what if the perp had a gun or knife?' Then 'she' thought 'but at least he was brave enough and honorable enough to assist someone in distress.' Then the general practice attorney in me screamed, 'Oh lord, what if the perp decides to sue the Emperor for injury to his windpipe, assault, etc.' Hell, in this day & age, it's a freakin' miracle the perp didn't press his own charges against you! (I've seen that happen - rolls eyes at some of the absurdity in the law).
I'm so glad I'm not practicing law at the moment. Those voices in my head don't bother me as much. **winks**
