This is... This just disgusting.

And hopefully, it leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

There is a group on FFN, called the Literate Union, of which is run by a certain Lord Kelvin, of whom has it in his head to write, code and distribute through download a piece of software that actively scans the Fanfiction.Net for stories. The user then go to these stories and hit the report ( Read more... )

Well now, I'm having a similar reaction to you, but I'm following a different line of thinking ( ... )

I see where your point - FFN has that issue of just going "okay, it's been reported so it must be in violation" without properly checking, and since they rely on ad avenue to help keep things running, leaving the site would teach them a financial lesson. Even the people who are trying to alert others of the situation are having difficulties with the FFN admin. Although I'm pretty sure that if enough people raise a stink about this issue, and do so in a calm, reasonable and well-researched fashion with that financial incentive thrown in, the admins just might listen. (Then again, I'm an optimist.)

And you're right; the software itself isn't the main issue. It's the individuals who are using it. It seems silly on the surface, because the report button is easily available.

(Gah, posted without completing. D: Whoops.)

Anyway... The software probably isn't the issue. It's the individuals who use it and the person who has created it. Too me, the software is silly and useless within itself, because the report function is so easily available. Bad fics are always going to be there, as well as content that violate the terms. The users who find this content can report it, and bad fic writers can be encouraged to improve and grow. IT just feels like a bunch of mean-spirited folks who want to mold the site - which is clearly not theirs to begin with - to their "vision" or whatever their justification is.

... wow. Guy's a self-righteous prick. o_o

I don't know why some people are so obsessed with quality control on FF.Net. I know that I prefer the AO3 in many ways, but I've been with FF.Net for a long time (I remember finding it in '97, which can't be much longer than it opened) ... and really it's not so bad.

Yeah, the moderators kinda suck at their job (deleting or ignoring reported fic, in equal measure, without looking at it) and I often wonder who is in charge and whatever happened to Xing.... And, yes, there's a lot of fic that can be considered crap. But there're a lot of poorly written fic with good stories attached, and a lot of well written fic with poor stories attached.

... And really, it's all in fun. And some of us do write for ourselves (and share because people like it), so...

... okay, so I forget the point I was trying to make. I maybe think it was that I need to get back to work on my LoM fic or something one of these days? XD

It just feels like they're missing the point of FFN, which is fun, not obsessive-compulsive mean-spirited witch-hunts. The optimist in me is thinking that it'll eventually fall flat on its face. If not, then maybe people will become more aware and defend themselves accordingly.

XD I thoroughly agree! I should go back to fic writing, myself.
