This is the stuff I posted on facebook earlier when LJ was down because of the DDoS.  Worth reposting because it's worth reading and some of you aren't on the fb f-list.  These two have both gone viral, for very good reason.

"Happy Holidays" and Other Four Letter Words. Excerpt: "The only one who can take your Christ out of your Christmas is you." ( Read more... )

I like to wish people "Merry Christmas," because that's what the name of the holiday is. Occasionally, I get someone who pretends to be offended, "I don't celebrate Christmas!" My go-to response to this is always, "Then have a joyous Federal holiday!" No one has ever not laughed at this.

I use Happy Holidays, because even people who celebrate Christmas also celebrate NYE. And I've recently learned that not all Christians celebrate Christmas.

That's an excellent article to use as a rejoinder to the perennial "War on Christmas" stories that come out every year.

That said, my default is Merry Christmas. Happy Holidays or Seasons Greetings just sounds odd coming out of my mouth. If, however, I know someone observes another holiday, I am happy to extend the appropriate greeting. It does not offend me to acknowledge someone else's religion, and simply hearing the words Merry Christmas shouldn't offend anyone.

Around here people will "correct" you if you say Happy Holidays because of the "war on Christmas". And there are people of other and no religions who feel like Christmas is shoved down their throats. I saw decorations up in August this year. I understand getting excited over a favorite holiday and all, but it seems to get more and more extreme every year. So I can understand the frustration that people who don't celebrate that holiday might feel.
