It frustrates and saddens me that so many of my friends, particularly the ones who are so very vocally religious, know so little about the origins of the holidays we all celebrate.

My facebook feed has been flooded with declarations that "Jesus is the reason for the season", "it's called a CHRISTmas tree", "they're CHRISTMAS parties, not holiday ( Read more... )

I'm all for an excuse to eat/make a good meal and have a party. :-)

And I have no problem with the Church coopting holidays. I just find it ironic when people insist it can't be so. As if the history of the holiday will somehow make their beliefs any less significant to them. Maybe I'm weird but I think that knowing where it came from actually enhances the sense of tradition.

There was a debate about "Merry Christmas" v "Happy Holidays" again on facebook today. So I told everyone to have a Cool Yule. :-) That is where most of the European holiday traditions came from. :-)
