Part of me can't understand why they don't get it cut short - it must suck to get whipped in the eye by the end of your ponytail at that speed - but then of course obviously they don't want to look "butch" either.
Still I would think it would be safest to put your hair in an arrangement where it did not call attention to itself in any way. Like military chicks do. They coil it all up in braids and whatnot and let it out after the duty day.
It's more convenient to pull it back into a ponytail. I've done gymnastics, trampoline and circus stuff with short hair and with a ponytail and the ponytail was the easiest to work with because you don't have to get back to a salon regularly and don't have to style it.
A ponytail or bun have always been the standard. Short haircuts actually stand out. Kerri Strug, Mary Lou Retton, and others were known by their hair because it wasn't a ponytail or bun.
The issue with Douglas is that the focus has been specifically on her hair being "nappy." The commenters from Twitter were not talking about appearance deductions - they were talking about Gabby's hair not fitting the standards for Black women in the U.S.
The discussion from gymnastics fans is different (although if you check Tumblr, there is a lot of racist talk about how Douglas should be called a monkey instead of a squirrel.
It really is a different thing, the way men's appearances are policed versus how women's bodies are.
Damn. As I said I hadn't seen any of the comments on twitter and none of the articles referenced specific comments. So I assumed it was the same as the gymnastics blogs. That's not cool at all.
Thankfully I also don't have a Tumblr account. WTF is wrong with people?
