How do I bullshit myself?

So I had one of those thoughts that only occurs to me just as I'm falling asleep and my mind is firing randomly  (timed just perfectly to catch my husband as he's just drifted off).

I was thinking about religion. Wondering, why do people continue to believe, deeply, honestly, from the very core of their beings, in things that have no evidence ( Read more... )

The utility of rationality. It may be that the reason for wide spread irrationality is that being strictly rational provides an evolutionary disadvantage.

I don't know if I accept anything unexamined, but I know I have a few cognitive biases lurking about in my brain. Like -- if I think someone seems really smart, but then I find out they believe in some religion, I tend to start wondering whether they're going to try to convert me or something. Sometimes they never do, but the fact that I have that knee-jerk reaction is evident.
