I opposed the war from the start, too. I gave money to Kerry. Most Democrats I knew denied that Kerry was a flip flopper but secretly believed that Kerry would flip flop on the war, once he became President

Ah, that last paragraph is exactly what Mr. Chip is talking about. That’s just your political perception. It goes without saying that your friends don’t see themselves as you do. By the way, that’s complete irony: Can a serf exist without oppressive government laws to keep them in their place?
Actually, that last para was an observation of someone I knew who went to Libertarian conventions. Once I heard it, I realized how much it applied to the libertarians that I know (with some exceptions.)
Local warlords/strongmen/rich people used hired thugs to keep serfs, peasants, etc on the land. If you define government to be any local monopoly of force, then there always is a government. The libertarian ideal is that there will be some central government who's primary purpose is to protect property and to prevent warlords from using force to seize property. All well and good, but unbridled economic power means that some people will have no property. They have to take whatever terms they are offered and essentially become property. Many libertarians believe that you should be able to sell yourself into slavery. On the whole, they are smart people who believe that they wil be the property owners. But, everyone has delusions about themselves.
ok you guys have really just proved my point, that your perceptions are your reality. I think the real deal is that Joe percieves one thing which is his world. Jim believe something else which is his reality. Apperently not enough people share the same perceptions/realities to make this country agree with itself.
