I dont know what it is but I feel like i have lost my harpin mojo. Despite some good comments from some people last night I just ddint feel like I played well. I might have drank too much earlier and was just un motivated. I think it might also be that I have been listening to a lot of bluegrass and have been having a hard time reconciling blues ( Read more... )

I've come to know that some jazz guys can't play the blues because they can't play the blues. There's no such thing as knowing too much. That's a silly way of describing it, & I am sick of hearing it all the time. These particular jazz musicians probably don't even like the blues. They think to themselves, "what can I do to make this hipper?" So they take it & they make it something that they would think is cool. The result is not the blues.

So the moral of the story, as you already know: Never ask someone to play on a rock tune just because you heard them shredding bop.

Oh yeah & give the chef a try on the blues even if he looks like a country banjo player & his skin never goes below 97 bright on the tappi scale.

Oh yes I know Brian gross very well. He was one of the first bands around here that I was relaly going to see a lot. that is how I even got into booking at the music box. I would love to come see yall and perhaps get a song or two in with you. Bg is a good guitar player and a really great show. I have his first record and I have to get the live from blues alley that just came out last year. but yeah I am free so I will be there. we can make plans later and if you wanna practice some if I am free we can do that too.

Didn't you learn anything from Austin Powers 2?

Get this. My ears are always growing faster than my skills. Everyday I am playing better & sounding worse than I ever have before. Trippy huh? That in mind, I would say that the more blues I listen to the worse of a blues player I would become because my mind would start to pick up on the subtleties of the genre faster than my fingers could keep up. Even trippier.

Oh yeah, record yourself all the time. It’s the only way. So much of your playing is in your head & many times what you think is coming out isn’t.

Tape? What happened to your Minidisc? Do they even make tapes anymore? Room capture, like echos? That’ll just cover up your mistakes. Hopefully that was no help in answering your question.
