The problem is that the "enemy" in Iraq is everyone except for a few corrupt politicians who are trying to hitch a ride to power or who simply want to steal what they can while they can. There are government death squads hunting down Sunnis and how protect Shiites who kill our troops. Every militia is the enemy, but if you don't join a militia, then you have no protection from other militias. It seems like every month there is a new deadly group that we are calling terrorist because they are shooting at us ( ... )

I think that even if the locals kill off some baddies they will still be exporting tactics all over the world. Thus no democracy will be able to help stablize any region of the world without massive force and death. If we leave we dont know what will happen. If we stay we can somewhat control what happens, and if we stay with lots more firepower and bombs we can completely control what happens. In either case there is massive death, either directly caused by our bombs and guns, or indirectly cause by the guns and bombs of others that we have allowed to opperate. In either case we have to try to contain this and it is clear we are failing to do so. YEs you can put out a fire with gas and yes you do need a whole lot of it, so lets do that. If we dont we will need all the gas int he world to put out the massive inferno that will result.

Well, then pack your bags, because we don't have a million extra soldiers laying around. That means draft. Obviously, it makes more sense to draft people my age -- when we get killed, all it does is lower social security outlays in a few years. However, it is your age that will go.

Oh yeah, and look at who will be calling the shots. Mr I-don't-care-how-many-soldiers-get killed-as-long-as-I-doesn't have-to-admit-gross-error.

I understand that in a troop increase sceneario I might be going and I certainly have military friends who are on their way now as a result of the surge. I think a more agressive air campaign with less regard for collateral damage would be great. Carpet Bombing always works.

I know my generation will be the ones who bear this burden on the ground and then the clean up for the years to follow. I am trying to get a jump on that clean up phase. I wouldnt make a good soldier but I would make good civilian leadership.
