I've got this idea in my head that I haven't been able to articulate very well yet. It's super important to me, like, calling-of-my-life kind of important. If you haven't already, check out Open-mesh, BATMAN, and ROBIN. Also MIT's Roofnet project, and Meraki (although that is suffering from greed).

Doc Searls of Linux Journal had a series of articles detailing his experience with trying to establish a Muni-net in Santa Barbara after Comcast or Verizon (can't remember who) decided SB wasn't worth building out with fiber.

I think I remember hearing about some city that implemented a city-wide wireless WAN. I can't recall what city it was. Maybe it was in the Linux Journal articles.
