Poor Maylee is having some skin issues. She has been scratching and biting herself for a few days now and I felt the area that she was and there was nothing I could find, so I just made sure that I could cut down on her scratching and biting till we found a vet. Now Maylee has a whole bunch of places that have developed hair loss not just the one ( Read more... )

good luck. It definotly sounds like allergies, and perhaps to grass or the environment where you live. I gave my dog vitamin C and a homeopathic for his allergies as per suggestion by a holistic vet. Good luck. Glad she is otherwise doing good. I go into class next week in SR as a retrain.

Thanks, we just got back from the vet and Maylee is now on antibiotics and a supplement with omega fatty acids and such. Our new vet said she is suffering from a secondary bacterial infection and she wants to treat that first then we will be doing things that will help us determine if it's allergies or if she just has really sensitive skin. My guide has had skin issues in the past, so while it's new for me it's not new for her. Then we have a follow-up in two weeks.

Enjoy your time in SR and I hope you get a new dog that is everything that you want and hoped for in a new guide. It's hard retiring a old friend and guide, but a new hyper ball of fur might help a bit! Take care.

Oh dear. This isn't good. I hope you are able to figure out why Maylee is getting itchy and stuff. I'm sure it's just alergies. It is a new area and everything, so ... You never know.

The vet seems to think that it's allergies or hypo-sensitive skin issues. Due to the itching, scratching and biting, Maylee has developed a secondary bacterial skin infection and we are treating that first then start the next steps to determining the issue. Yay no ticks or fleas though!

I have to say giving a dog pills is a very interesting task, I'm really happy that one of the trainers, Lucy (also the O&M trainer for this months class) should a classmate and I how to. I was at the right place at the right time that night when my classmate had to give some meds to her dog and asked Lucy when I was talking to her. At least Maylee likes the stroking of her neck!

Hmmm ... that's interesting. I've heard of putting pills in their food, but I thought that some dogs would just eat around them. I'm going to want to see how pills are given as well because I think the flee and heartworm preventatives come in pill form.

Hey,

Oh my, your poor girl. You are most likely right though about it being allergies. Taking her to the vet is a good idea.

I'm glad to hear that otherwise things are going well.

Take care,

Thanks Maylee feels the love! She has a secondary bacterial infection that we have to deal with first and the vet thinks it maybe allergies or hypo-sensitive skin looking at her background medical history. First we are going to deal with the SBI, then next step is looking into what caused it if it hasn't clear by her follow-up visit. If it has cleared up then it's more lucky hypo-sensitive skin then allergies.

Good luck with the paperwork and interviews on getting a new guide and give Sunset hugs and lick from Maylee and I. It's touch retiring a dog regardless of how long you've worked with him/her and how many dogs you have.

There you are!!!! I was going to e-mail and ask where you were since I've not seen you post to the list, did you migrate, yet? I am sorry to hear Maylee has a few health issues to contend with, but I hope that will get nipped in the butt fairly soon. Since you have follow-up in two weeks, don't hesitate to ask the isntructors to give pointers to help alleviate the dog distraction issues. It is also that time of year where folks do bring their dogs on walks now eh? other than that, sounds like you are doing well! Keep it up!

Lol, hi Jen and hi Bronze. I haven't migrated yet, it's on my to-do-list, really . The follow-up in two weeks is with Maylee's vet, I think that it's going to be at least 6 months to a year till our first follow-up from GDB. It is definitely the time of year that everyone is outside walking their dogs that usually stay pent up behind fences or on patios. Right now I'm following everything that my instructors taught me for dog distractions and she is getting much better. I'm going to see how it goes and if it doesn't improve in the next month or so I'm going to call Nick for a visit or just some more pointers over the phone.

Could the skin issues just be stress from the move?
