The coffee shop that I visit to do chemistry features the best chai within walking distance of our apartment. For an extra 1 to 1 1/2 miles each way I could be at a super-nice, indie shop, but the distance is too great with my heavy backpack (and cold temps or strong winds), and it's more likely to be full of students at all hours. I've always suspected that librarians judge me on what I check out. It affects what I borrow. I know that they've seen everyone check out everything in the library...probably lots of times...but yeah.

However, you could tell a little white lie about having a tutoring job. If you get "caught," I mean. I mean, you're sort of tutoring yourself, right?

Good thought on the tutoring thing. I had some vague "in case I ever have to teach" line lined-up, but yours is better.

I can totally relate to the library thing. I always feel strange when it's CSA season when we only buy frozen chicken, canned goods, milk, and snacky-things at the store. I can just feel the judgment. At least if they had the nerve to say something we have a great reason.
