Not having been a parent myself, I can't say definitively, but I think many parents go through trying to figure things out, even moms. Especially youngest siblings or only children. My last roommate in the Sates is pregnant and confided in me that the first diaper she will ever change will be that of her own daughter. They get pretty cool by 4 or 5, and they start to suck again at 13.
I agree with you that when your SO is away for awhile, you do end up remembering how much they mean to you and how much you appreciate them. Makes the reunion all the more special, too. Unfortunately, not everyone- probably most everyone- can't cope with that. Quite a bit of the lads on my husband's ship were dumped by their girlfriends during the deployment. One was even dumped the day before his gf was suppose to fly out to see him.

As for the diaper thing - I can totally understand. I use a respirator mask thing now because the smell just takes me out of the game.
