That's how chemistry works... sometimes. Things don't always have to explode. But I mean, when it happened to Jay Garrick, it was a freak accident so I guess no one was supposed to recreate it, but try telling that to my uncle. And me. We wouldn't be speedsters if we hadn't been a little reckless.
