Minseok wants to drill his fists into a wall. And maybe kick down a wall or two with his feet. But he can’t, since he’s sitting in the middle of the school’s cafeteria surrounded by his friends and his fellow peers. And plus, he knows that if he does flip a table or kick the school’s cafeteria wall out of nowhere, he’d have quite the reputation as being that one crazy senior who lost his marbles during second shift lunch. Surely his friends would understand if he was to snap. After all, they were aware of his…condition.
His condition? A giant crush on a boy named Jongdae.
“Hyung, you look like you want to murder someone. Tone it down a bit, will you? You’re scaring the freshmen,” Yifan whispers to the older, taking glances at the table of freshmen sitting two tables in front of them appearing terrified because of the stare he was (unknowingly) giving them. He was completely zoned out at the time, thinking of the many ways he could get his mind off of Jongdae.
Minseok groans in response, lifting his fork and rolling around his salad. He looks up from the leafy plate and stares at the boy sitting in front of him.
There he was; the cause of Minseok’s problems.
Jongdae’s all smiles and laughter as Yixing tells him a joke and Minseok’s heart feels like it’s being tugged down to the center of the earth and out to the other half of the world.
Minseok’s not sure what to feel about Jongdae. He’d be lying if he says he isn’t attracted to him, but he’d also be lying if he says that he doesn’t hate him either. He considers his feelings toward him an extremely one-sided love-hate relationship. Sure, they’ve been friends for over three years now and all, but Jongdae is that one friend that Minseok would definitely date in a heartbeat if he had the chance to.
Jongdae is also that one friend that Minseok would definitely throw down in a heartbeat if he had the chance to.
Jongdae is perfect. He’s got the looks, the humor, and the smarts to top it all off. But his face is what drives Minseok crazy. It’s Jongdae’s smile. Sure, he’s got normal smiles, but he always has that one, stupid grin that makes him look so mischievous and smug. It’s when his mouth curves up at the corners and Minseok just wants to find a way to wipe that smug look off of his face.
“Minseok hyung, did you hear his pun?” The corners of his lips curve up and Minseok fights the urge to reach over and pull them down himself. He keeps his composure by clenching his hand around his fork.
“No,” Minseok forces a smile. “What did he say?”
“He was in chemistry earlier and he says…” Minseok drowns out Jongdae’s words to only focus on his lips. Minseok notices that when Jongdae’s talking, the corners of his lips would twitch up. Minseok makes a sound unhuman in the back of his throat.
“Isn’t that hilarious?” Jongdae bursts back into a fit of laughter, shutting his eyes from the laughter and showing his cute eye crinkles (As much as Minseok would hate to admit, he’s in love with Jongdae’s eye smiles). Minseok feigns a hearty laugh just for the sake of keeping Jongdae’s smile lively. Jongdae continues his conversation with Yixing and Minseok’s need to flip a table or break down a wall increases until he accidently snaps his fork in half from applying too much pressure to the plastic.
“Yifan told me that your face during lunch was hilarious,” Luhan says as soon as he sees his friend for the last period of the day, sliding into his desk next to Minseok’s. Meanwhile, the senior is groaning loudly, burying his face into his palms.
“Maybe I should just move to America and change my name,” Minseok grumbles. He’s just so done with Jongdae and his handsome face, his eye smiles, his little grins and - sigh.
“Do you think I look like a Bob? Or a Matt?”
“You’re not leaving me here alone. How dare you think of leaving your one and only best friend?” Luhan feigns sadness, wiping away an imaginary tear. “You’re staying here in Korea and you’re staying as Kim Minseok and you’re also going to grow a pair and tell Jongdae you like him before you head off to college. You’re fine with dating a younger man, right?”
“Please stop,” Minseok says. “What about you, Mr. I’m-Dating-A-Sophomore?”
“At least I had the balls to ask Sehun out. What about you?” Luhan scoffs. Minseok hesitates before answering.
“I’m fine with dating people younger than I am, except for Jongdae.”
“Why? He’s only a junior.”
“So?”
“Why don’t you date him?”
“Because his lips bother me. Actually, scratch that. His whole face bothers me.”
“Don’t deny it. You like him. We all know that you’d drop to your knees in a split second if he asked for a blowjob from you. Besides, everyone knows you two have a thing for each other. Everyone knows the way you guys look at each other. You’re just trying to hide the fact that you do like him.” Luhan grins, making a checkmark using his thumb and index finger and jutting it under his chin. Minseok throws his eraser at him. You vulgar human being. Luhan, how does Sehun put up with your perverted self?
“Piss off,” Minseok rolls his eyes.
“Someone’s a little love-struck,” Luhan teases in a sing-song tone. “Oh! And aren’t you tutoring him tonight?”
“It’s official. I’m moving to America and changing my name to Bob. No one can stop me. Screw you Luhan.”
“C’mon Minseok don’t be like this. At least properly teach before you change your identity. Maybe he can give you extra credit.” Luhan winks.
“Screw. You.”
“I honestly don’t understand why you don’t get your own friends for help,” Minseok says, turning the steering wheel out of the school parking lot. “Aren’t you supposed to be super smart?”
“Baekhyun and Chanyeol suck at calculus and I’m not as close with everyone else. Yeah, I am super smart. But this chapter sucks and my brain does not comprehend anything no matter how many times I try to look at it.” Jongdae says, tapping his fingers on the side door. He turns to Minseok.
“Plus, Luhan hyung told me that you passed calculus with flying colors.” That bitch. Minseok slows down at a red light. He could feel the grin on Jongdae’s face without even looking at him. Minseok turns to face Jongdae and sure enough, the corners of his mouth are up and so are his eyebrows. Minseok sighs. A smile itches at his own face so he has to turn away to face the road.
“You’re lucky you’re cute.” Minseok mutters under his breath so Jongdae doesn’t hear.
“What?”
“Nothing. It’s nothing.”
Minseok feels the need to kick his door right off of its hinges. Tolerance is extremely difficult when it comes to Jongdae. Minseok’s been quizzing him for the past half hour and the amount of grins he received is too many to count on his fingers. Jongdae yawns as Minseok assigns him a new problem.
Despite his weary state, he gets right to it. He’s completely oblivious to Minseok’s eyes on him; or more specifically, his lips. At this point, I don’t know if I want to kiss him or if I want to hit him. Minseok thinks to himself, watching how Jongdae’s mouth curls up at the corners because he’s confident that he has the right answer. And when is that pizza going to get here?
The doorbell rings as soon as the thought passes through his mind. Jongdae looks up from his completed problem and catches Minseok’s eyes, just as the latter shoots up from the table. Minseok needs to get out of the room. Is it hot in here or is it just me? He feels stuffy and Jongdae isn’t helping one bit.
“That must be the pizza. I’ll be right back,” Minseok says, exiting the room with his wallet in hand. He’s tugging at his collar and taking deep breaths. He steps up to the door and sighs, running a hand through his hair. He swings the door open and is met with a familiar face rather than the pizza delivery guy.
“Luhan what are you doing here?”
“I’m your support team!” Luhan smiles brightly, holding up a small grocery bag and a small, colorful bouquet of flowers. Minseok gives him a long stare before slamming the door in his face.
“Minseok!” Luhan wails from behind the door. Minseok sighs, slowly reopening the door.
“You’re cockblocking me and I’d appreciate it if you left me alone to teach Jongdae. Unless it’s a life-or-death situation, you have five seconds to state your business.” Minseok deadpans, leaning against the door frame.
“I’m your support team!” Luhan shoves the items into Minseok’s hands before the other could realize. “Cockblocking you say? What a coincidence! You might need these.”
Minseok peers into the bag and is met by a bag of condoms and chocolate. What the hell type of coincidence is this? Minseok’s face flushes and he’s ready to beat Luhan up with the flowers, but when he looks up, Luhan is already sprinting towards his car. Minseok shouts at him.
“I love you!” Luhan cries out with loud cackles. Minseok’s face darkens as he watches Luhan drive out of his driveway. He closes the door and sighs, walking over to the kitchen and dropping off the bag. He gives it a harsh glare before smacking it across the counter.
When Minseok walks back into his room with the bouquet of flowers, he’s surprised to see Jongdae resting his head down on the table, dozing off. Minseok slowly cracks a smile. He’s really been working hard. He sits down next to Jongdae so he’s facing him, resting his cheek on his arm as a pillow. Minseok glances over to the papers scattered on top of the calculus textbook and stares at the abundance of eraser marks.
The pencil lead is faint, but Minseok is able to work out familiar numbers. They’re the real answers to the equations. But the legible writing that’s left on the paper is absolutely wrong. Minseok remembers correcting him, but why is it that the wrong answers remained?
Did he answer these wrong on purpose? Minseok raises an eyebrow. He turns to face Jongdae and realizes how big of a mistake that was to do.
Even when Jongdae sleeps, Minseok is able to see that his lips still show the slightest indent in the corners. Minseok is conflicted on if he wants to hit him with his hands or with his lips.
Instead, he opts to gently brush the bangs out of Jongdae’s face. Jongdae stirs, scaring the daylights out of Minseok. His breath hitches and retracts his hand. Oh God what if he wakes up? He asks himself as he traces Jongdae’s jawline and cheekbones with his eyes.
“You’re unbelievable,” Minseok whispers under his breath, unconsciously bringing his hand back up to Jongdae’s face and dropping his fingers down to Jongdae’s lips. This is creepy as hell Minseok you need to stop. He says to himself.
But self-control is hard.
His thumb pad grazes the corner of Jongdae’s mouth and Minseok suddenly finds it difficult to breathe.
His hand is gently cupping the side of Jongdae’s face now as his thumb continues to lightly trace the lines. Minseok’s too fixated on Jongdae’s mouth to notice the latter’s awakening.
“Hyung,” Jongdae mutters, but Minseok doesn’t hear it.
“Minseok hyung,” This time, his name finally registers inside his brain and he emits a sound that sounds like a mix between a squeak and a screech. He’s drawing back his hand in the speed of light, but Jongdae’s hand is faster. His hand sits on top of Minseok’s, which is still on his face.
“Hyung, you can’t go around touching people like this.” Jongdae sits up, much to Minseok’s despair. “This is how you’re supposed to do it.”
Minseok loses his breath as Jongdae leans forward and presses his lips softly against his, his hand reaching up to place against Minseok’s cheek.
This is when Minseok finally realizes something. He doesn’t hate Jongdae as much as he thinks he does. In fact, he likes him. A lot.
And he also realizes how hurtful pillows could be when they are used as weapons against ridiculously cute boys. He reaches over on his bed, lips still connected with Jongdae’s, and grabs the nearest pillow-thing (At this point, Minseok doesn’t care if it’s a pillow or not) on his bed.
He swings without any hesitation and a yelp echoes through the household.
“You did what?” Luhan is cackling on the floor, despite all of the ludicrous looks his peers are shooting at him. Minseok’s face is dark and he hates the need to repeat himself.
“I said,” Minseok pauses, “I smacked him with my giant fluffy panda pillow. I mean, like, he just kissed me out of the blue and I wasn’t expecting that at all.”
“The one I bought you for Christmas last year?” Minseok nods, making Luhan laugh even harder. “You basically invited him in for a kiss since you were all touchy-feely with his lips. That’s translated as ‘kiss me right now and then we’ll have awesome sex’.”
“Luhan stop please.”
“So you do want the awesome sex?” Luhan asks, clasping his hand over his chest and wiping away the tears accumulating at his eyes.
“Shut up, oh my God. We’re not horny teenagers like you and Sehun.”
“Don’t be jealous. You can join us next time if you want.”
“No.”
“But anyways, what happened after that?”
“The pizza arrived and we ate together in silence. But that’s not the worst part, because do you want to know what I had to do next? I had to drive him home since he doesn’t have his license yet.” Laughter resumes and Minseok groans again. He looks down on the floor and steps on Luhan’s side. Luhan is wheezing now.
“Shut up,” He says, hiding his face in embarrassment.
“At least you got somewhere with him! Our test dummy’s gotten to first base and survived his first ever emotional crash course!” Luhan exclaims happily and Minseok is ready to drop his English textbook on his friend’s stomach but decides that self-control is necessary. But he lets the textbook ‘slip’ off the desk anyway and Luhan’s shout could be heard down the hall.
“Minseok hyung!” As soon as he hears Jongdae’s voice down the hallway, Minseok immediately turns around and speeds in the other direction. He doesn’t care if he’s going to be late to class. He just didn’t want to see Jongdae after smacking him in the face with a happy panda pillow. It was embarrassing. It’s not every day when you get kissed by the guy you’ve been crushing on since forever and instead of enjoying the kiss, you smack the dude with the cutest pillow ever in existence.
Crap crap crap. Minseok repeats in his head as he tries to weave through the busy traffic in the cramped hallways. Minseok can still hear Jongdae’s voice, so he decides to cut through the cafeteria. Luckily, he loses Jongdae, but he’s also losing time to get to class.
Minseok lets out a loud sigh as he rushes to his class, paranoid that Jongdae was going to pop out of some random corner.
Minseok’s phone doesn’t stop vibrating throughout his class block and he curses Jongdae mentally as his phone buzzes again. His display screen reads 16 new messages from Jongdae and Yifan shoots him a look.
“Something happen between you and Jongdae last night?” He asks, twirling his pen around his fingers. Minseok sinks in his seat, sadly nodding his head.
“I hit him with my panda pillow after he kissed me.” Yifan breaks into a grin.
“So are you two a thing now?” Yifan asks, just as the bell rings.
“No. Yes. Wait, I don’t know. I mean, like, I want us to be a thing but I don’t. You feel me?” He looks over to the clock and thanks the Lord because school is over.
“What are you going to do about it? You guys already kissed. You might as well start dating.” Minseok slings his bag over his shoulder and the two leave the classroom.
“But how am I supposed to do that?”
“Do what?”
“Date. I have no experience in that category, dude. I’ve lasted my entire high school life without a relationship and now that Jongdae’s finally initiated something, I’m afraid to leave him when we graduate in like, four months.”
“You’ll be fine. Knowing you, you’ll be able to make that relationship work. Like Luhan says, just imagine yourself as a test dummy but be careful when you dive head first into things.” Minseok looks up at Yifan.
“Thanks. But I don’t think that’s what he says. He just calls me a dummy. And I think the ‘dive head first’ is a sexual innuendo.” Yifan sighs at Minseok’s explanation.
“Oh. Well then.”
“By the way, how’s it going with Zitao? Long distance relationships sound difficultsmiles at the mentioning of Zitao. The latter was his boyfriend of two years that he met when he was vacationing in China to visit his family.
“We skype every night. That could be you and Jongdae after we graduate.” Minseok makes another whining noise at the thought of skyping Jongdae. Just the thought of calling Jongdae every night, with his grin stretched out on Minseok’s large Samsung Galaxy 5 makes him groan loudly.
“Or you could just groan at him over the phone like you do now. You’re basically a living zombie when it comes to Jongdae.”
“Groaning is good. I’ll stick to that.” Minseok groans again for emphasis.
When Minseok makes it out to the campus parking lot, he’s met with Jongdae standing near his car with his arms crossed over his chest and his bottom lip jutted out in a pout. Minseok’s heart drops to his stomach. Oh God. Confrontation time. I wish I had a pillow with me. Better yet, maybe I could catch a ride with Yifan. Yeah I should totally do that. Minseok is ready to turn on his heel and drop on all fours to break into a sprint towards his friend who is on the other side of the parking lot, but is stopped by Jongdae calling out his name eagerly.
“Minseok hyung! Hyung, can we talk? Please? I’ll stay here all day if I have to!” Just walk away Minseok. C’mon you can do it. Stop looking at his face before you get pulled in - goddammit. Have you no self-control?
“What’s up?” Minseok asks sheepishly, walking towards the junior. He’s ruffling the back of his hair nervously and his heart is beating erratically in his rib cage.
“About yesterday,” Minseok’s face pales as Jongdae steps forward and meets him halfway. “Why did you hit me?” Minseok stutters as he finds the right words to try and answer his question the best that he can. Please don’t come out as word vomit. Please brain I am begging you.
“Because you kind of shocked me by kissing me and you know how I’m really uncomfortable with being touchy-touchy so I panicked.” Minseok mentally face palms. “And it just so happens that I also like you a lot.”
Jongdae’s eyes widen and Minseok’s hand flies to his mouth. Why the hell did I say that? Oh no. Oh God abort mission. Abort mission! Brain! You have failed me!
“You like me?” Jongdae’s face lights up.
“Yes - wait, no.” Minseok watches as the light drains from Jongdae’s eyes and he panics. “Wait that’s not what I meant I just-”
“So you don’t like me?” I’ve dug my own grave. Luhan, Yifan - please come to my funeral and play the Space Jam theme song. Yifan, I am allowing you to dunk a basketball in my casket.
“No! I really do like you and your stupid face and those stupid little grins you do all the time. As much as it pisses me off, I really like seeing it and its super conflicting and I-” Minseok is cut off by a chuckling Jongdae stepping forward, reaching his hand out and caressing Minseok’s cheek.
“Hyung, I know.” He leans forward, closing the space between their lips. Kim Jongdae you seriously need to stop doing this before I have a heart attack and die before I graduate. Jongdae’s arm wraps around his waist. Minseok’s arms are trapped between him and Jongdae’s chest and a he makes another dying noise in the back of his throat.
The moment that Jongdae pulls back, Minseok doesn’t notice the burning feeling in his cheeks. It’s the grin plastered on Jongdae’s lips. Minseok reaches forward and pinches the corners of Jongdae’s lips without any warning, making the younger cry out. He lets go of Minseok with a small whine.
“Ouch! That hurt!” Jongdae exclaims, massaging his cheeks.
“Stop kissing me without giving me a heads up,” Minseok says, pinching Jongdae’s mouth again. He’s completely flustered.
“Like this?” Before Minseok could say anything, Jongdae quickly pecks his lips. Minseok groans, harshly punching Jongdae in the chest.
“I swear to God, Jongdae I am going to injure you if you keep kissing me.” Jongdae leans forward again with a grin plastered on his face and Minseok shoots his hand up, stopping the junior. “Get that stupid grin off your face. I’d do anything to turn your grin upside down.”
“Anything?” Minseok huffs, nodding.
“What about going on a date with me?”
“I will not - wait, what?”
“I don’t think you’ve realized how much I like you too.” Jongdae grins again and Minseok fights the urge to pinch him again. “So is that a yes to the date?”
“I’m pretty sure that if we dated, those grins will never leave your face.” Jongdae nods, trying his best to hide his grin. Which does not work at all. His lips contour into a mix between a grin and a scowl and Minseok is laughing heartily at the attempt. He reaches over and uses his thumb pads to stretch out the awkward line into a smile. Without thinking, Minseok’s gaze drops from Jongdae’s eyes to his lips. He finds himself leaning forward and initiating the kiss this time.
Minseok’s not very experienced with love, so this kiss is super awkward and he just kind of stays there, with his lip not moving on Jongdae’s. And he likes it like that. The test dummy has to start somewhere to learn.
“That’s not how you kiss, hyung,” Jongdae whispers against Minseok’s lips. Before Jongdae can do anything, Minseok leans back and sticks his palm up so Jongdae’s lips come into contact with his palm.
“No more kisses,” Minseok looks away shyly, fishing out his car key from his bag with his other hand.
“So did you want to go on that date with me or no?” Jongdae smiles against Minseok’s palm. Minseok brings his hand down and walks away from Jongdae and towards the driver’s seat, leaving Jongdae standing alone. The junior stares at Minseok through the back window in confusion as Minseok starts the car. Minseok steps out of his car and leans against the door, a shy smile on display.
“Well, aren’t you going to get in the car?” Jongdae cracks a final grin before rushing over to the passenger’s side and joining his new boyfriend.
Unfortunately, Minseok catches that grin and he begins to attack Jongdae as soon as he gets in the car; laughter filling the air.
Author's note: Thank you so much chenceforxiu for getting me back into writing :) I really hope Yifan and Luhan didn't distract from Xiuchen ;;
